Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire, has welcomed the announcement from Mr Mark Woods, the Headteacher of Orton Longueville School, and Mr Malcolm Ellison, the Principal of Stanground College that Peterborough City Council has agreed to provide £34million to rebuild the two schools.

Mr Vara, who has long argued that there should be more educational funding from the Council for the south of Peterborough, has congratulated Mr Woods and Mr Ellison, along with Cllr John Holdich, Cabinet Member for Education on Peterborough City Council.

Last year, Mr Vara led a delegation of representatives from the two secondary schools and the City Council to meet with the Education Minister, Lord Hill of Oareford. The meeting was set up by Mr Vara to negotiate funds for the two schools. The Department’s review into funding for the schools is yet to be published.

Mr Vara said:
“Having long fought the case for more funds from the Council for schools in the south of Peterborough I am delighted at the announcement for both the schools. This is a good decision by Cllr Marco Cereste, Leader of the Council, and Cllr John Holdich, the member in charge of education.

“These are much-needed funds and will be greatly appreciated by pupils, parents and those who run the schools. I will be in close contact with both Headteachers to see how the funds will be used to maximum effect.

“Notwithstanding the Council’s announcement, I will continue to press the Education Minister for more funding for these schools following the meeting I set up between local representatives and Lord Hill last year.”
