Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire recently met with members of the RNIB to hear how at least 50% of sight loss in the UK is avoidable if detected and treated early enough.

Mr Vara heard how sight loss currently costs the UK economy more than £6bn per year and how ensuring early treatment can help both save money and prevent unnecessary sight loss.

Mr Vara said:

"Sight loss affects two million people in the UK, and causes much misery and suffering”.

"The importance of early treatment to eye problems should not be underestimated and I urge everyone to make sure they get their eyes tested regularly".

“I congratulate the enormous work that the RNIB do for all those affected by sight loss and wish them continued success.”

Steve Winyard, Head of Policy and Campaigns at RNIB, said:

"We are pleased that Shailesh took the time to come and discuss these issues with us. Regular sight tests are vital as they pick up early signs of eye disease and save sight. In addition, reducing unnecessary sight loss makes financial sense for both national and local government”.
