Shailesh Vara yesterday called for supermarkets and retailers to use local suppliers wherever possible.

Shailesh Vara, MP for North West Cambridgeshire, yesterday called for supermarkets and retailers to use local suppliers wherever possible.

Speaking in a debate in the House of Commons on Food Industry Competitiveness, Mr Vara said that the use of local suppliers ensured greater guarantees in terms of quality of produce as well as helping to promote the local economy.

Mr Vara said:

“I am a firm believer in supermarkets and retailers using, wherever possible, local suppliers for food.

“The quality of British produce is recognised throughout the world and the use of local suppliers also helps to strengthen the local economy and back British farmers and local jobs.

“People regularly tell me that they are keen to buy local produce and I believe it is important that this matter is continually raised at the highest level to ensure that supermarkets and retailers support the local community.”
