Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire, opened the very well-attended Village Family Fun Day in Holywell-cum-Needingworth on Monday.

The event was held to promote the clubs and societies in the village as well as the sports facilities available to them. Local people got together at the Millfield Sports Centre for a number of fun and sporting activities which included ‘Wacky Races’, a dance display from the Norma Terry School of Dance, face painting, a 20/20 cricket match, tennis, tombola, a penalty shoot-out and much more. The event also had a BBQ, beer tent and cream teas.

The Village Day coincided with the 12th anniversary of the opening of the Centre by former Prime Minister Sir John Major.

Mr Vara said: -

“I very much enjoyed opening this well-attended and fun event. Despite some dark clouds, the weather in no way dampened spirits and a good time was had by all. The organisation was first-rate and all those who were involved in putting it together should be proud of their efforts. There was something for everyone on the day. The organisers set out to hold an event which was full of community spirit and this is exactly what was achieved. I wish them continued success.”

Mrs Sandra Mitcham, the Clerk of Holywell-cum-Needingworth Parish Council, also said: -

“We are delighted Mr Vara attended. Despite the weather the Parish Council were pleased with the turnout at the ‘Village Day’. The Day, 12 years after the lottery funded sports facilities were opened by John Major, was to promote the excellent sports facilities available in Needingworth, but also to engender community spirit and promote all clubs and societies in Holywell and Needingworth.”
