Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire, has met with sports teachers and Young Ambassadors from the Peterborough Schools Sport Partnership to discuss the future of sport in schools.

At the meeting in Westminster Mr Vara answered questions from the Young Ambassadors (a group made of up current students from Stanground College and Orton Longueville School) on topics ranging from how government policy will impact on the local partnership, funding matters for sport as a whole, the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games and the availability of different types of competitive sport to young people. Mr Vara also made clear his support for the benefits of sport.

Commenting, Mr Vara said:

“It was good to meet with the Young Ambassadors from the Peterborough School Sports Partnership. We had a positive and frank discussion about the state of the nation’s finances and the importance of competitive sport for young people.

“The questions posed to me from the Ambassadors were engaging and challenging, they are a great credit to their schools and the students they represent.”

Sophie Jeal, the Partnership’s Development Manager, added:

“We are very proud of our Young Ambassadors who spoke to Mr Vara, they asked some important questions that had been raised in Peterborough Schools by young people.

“I felt the meeting was productive and that Mr Vara listened intently to the young people’s concerns over the cuts to school sport. He assured me that he would be raising our issues with Michael Gove. We look forward to seeing Mr Vara at a School Sport Partnership event soon!”
