Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire, recently met with Ms Kay Rawlinson, along with other local residents in Hollow Road and the surrounding areas of Ramsey to view the state of the roads. Ms Rawlinson and her neighbours have deep concerns about the roads and Mr Vara was shown one area in particular where an accident had recently occurred.

Ms Rawlinson and local residents have been complaining for years about the condition of the roads but to no avail. Mr Vara was appalled by what he saw and mentioned that these were the worst roads he has seen since becoming an MP in 2005:

Mr Vara said: -

“I am appalled by the state of these roads which are in urgent need of repair. Whilst I appreciate that the funds available are limited, I genuinely believe that some of the money available should be directed to making these roads safer. Not for the first time I will be reminding Cambridgeshire County Council that rural people are taxpayers too. It is important that rural areas benefit from Council expenditure as do urban areas.”

Madeleine Jackson, local campaigner said:

“When Shailesh and I first met with Kay I was horrified to see the state of these roads. I am determined to work hard with Shailesh to get these repairs done so that the drivers who have to use these roads are no longer put at risk."

Ms Kay Rawlinson, local campaigner for better roads in Ramsey commented:

“I feel responsible that I must continue to lobby for these repairs until they have been carried out. In particular, since a neighbour of mine was seriously injured in an accident, I feel that the onus is on me to ensure no-one else suffers the same, or a worse fate on these roads. It is so frustrating that I cannot get the council to act.

"When I mentioned what I was doing to my neighbours, I was amazed at how many other people have tried to do the same – they are now supporting me in my activities and we are determined to get these roads put into a safe and driveable state."
