Shailesh Vara MP will tomorrow be having a meeting with George Eustice MP, Minister for Farming, Food and the Marine Environment at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The meeting has been arranged by Mr Vara to try and ensure that the world famous Stilton cheese can be made in the village of Stilton, which is in Mr Vara’s constituency. In order for cheese manufactured in the village to be called ‘Stilton’ cheese, a Protected Designation of Origin order needs to be amended and the campaign to make the amendment has been progressing for quite some time.

Richard Landy, a local historian, along with local businessman, Liam McGivern, have been leading the campaign with the support of Mr Vara.

The meeting with Mr Eustice is to discuss issues concerning the process seeking the eventual permission to manufacture cheese in the village.

Mr Vara said:
“I believe that the historic village of Stilton should be able to manufacture the world famous cheese of its namesake in the village itself. I hope that the meeting with the Minister, George Eustice, will allow us to progress the matter which will have huge benefits for the village of Stilton and the surrounding areas, both in terms of jobs and tourism.”
