Shailesh Vara MP recently welcomed sixth form students from Abbey College, Ramsey, to the Houses of Parliament as part of an educational trip to learn more about the history and workings of the seat of the UK Government.

Mr Vara hosted a question and answer session during which the students had the opportunity to discuss with him issues such as the forthcoming EU referendum, future funding for Cambridgeshire Schools and school transport. As part of their visit, the students were also taken on a guided tour of the parliamentary estate, sat in on debates taking place in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and took part in a quiz on the parliamentary system:

Following the visit Mr Vara said:

“We had a lively question and answer session during which we discussed a good range of local and national issues. I also explained the role of an MP, both in the constituency and in Parliament, as well as explaining my ministerial responsibilities at the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Work and Pensions. It was a pleasure meeting such an intelligent group of young people and to give them an insight into the world of politics."

Abbey College student Jordan Kielty commented:

“This trip was an amazing experience, providing us with knowledge, independence and enjoyment. Personally, I learnt a huge amount about the Government and Parliament and more young people need to be aware of this as it really does affect us - whether we are aware of it or not!”
