Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire, has written to the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, the Secretary of State for Transport, to seek improvements on a dangerous part of the A47 between Wansford and the junction with the A1260 in Peterborough. There have been at least 3 accidents on the stretch in recent weeks, two of which have been fatal.

The A47 is classed as a trunk road and as such is of strategic importance and funded from central government rather than by local authorities. The route itself runs from Birmingham to Great Yarmouth and passes through the north of Mr Vara’s constituency past RAF Wittering, Thornhaugh, Wansford, Sutton, Upton, Castor and Ailsworth.

Mr Vara said: -

“I am very concerned at the safety and condition of this road, particularly by the single carriageway stretch on the way to Wansford. Whilst I appreciate that there are limited funds available, this is a national speed limit rated route and its condition and the safety measures should reflect this. That is why I have written to Patrick McLoughlin, the Secretary of State for Transport and asked him to look into the matter.

“I also appreciate how dangerous the junction with Sutton Heath Road can be when exiting right and entering left, and I have asked Mr McLoughlin to also look into how the safety of this junction can be improved.”
