Vara Joins First Meeting of National Thomas Cook Taskforce

Shailesh Vara MP joined the first meeting of the national Thomas Cook Taskforce, chaired by the Secretary of State for Business, Andrea Leadsom and the Secretary of State for the DWP, Therese Coffey.

The multi-disciplinary team is made up of Government ministers, Members of Parliament, Government officials, trade union representatives, administrators as well as Local Government representatives.

The focus of the taskforce is to ensure support for employees and local economies most affected by the liquidation, with a view to minimising impact and promoting recovery.

The meetings will continue to take place on a weekly or bi-weekly basis during this initial period of the impact.

Mr Vara said:

“It has been a very difficult few days for the many local people affected by the collapse of Thomas Cook.

I am very pleased that a national taskforce has been established and is co-chaired by two Cabinet ministers, which reflects the importance of the matter to the Government.

The focus of everyone in attendance was clear; ensuring local people and their families get all the support available to them as quickly as possible.”
