Shailesh Vara has expressed concern about proposals to change on-street parking availability on Ramsey High Street in Ramsey.

The proposed Traffic Regulation Order will replace the current parking bays with no waiting areas as part of a new layout and design for traffic signals at the junction between the High Street and the Great Whyte. These changes are part of a planning-related condition on the approved Tesco development in Ramsey, which requires the installation of traffic signals at the junction.

Mr Vara is concerned about the impact a loss of convenient access to the High Street would have on small businesses in the town centre.

Mr Vara said:

"The loss of parking spaces on Ramsey High Street would be very detrimental to local shops, which are already threatened by the forthcoming Tesco development in the town.

"The parking bays on the high street are hugely important in attracting customers to the small shops and services, and any restriction on car parking will directly affect these businesses, which are vital for the local economy. I hope the County Council will review these proposals and drop them."

Mrs Angela Curtis, a member of Ramsey Town Council added:

"I am delighted that Shailesh has agreed to put his weight behind this issue. There are a lot of very important local businesses that provide vital services for the community that could be pushed under if these parking restrictions are introduced.

"The traffic calming influence of the parked cars is also a factor that should be recognised - and it would appear that there also is a risk of gridlock when large lorries try to negotiate the corner of High Street and Great Whyte if the traffic flow is controlled by traffic lights.

"The new Tesco store should improve facilities for local people - not destroy them.
