Vara working with council to secure New Town funding

Shailesh Vara MP has met with Cllr John Holdich, Leader of Peterborough City Council and Steve Cox, Executive Director for Place and Economy to discuss the Council’s plans to secure up to £25 million funding as part of the £3.6 billion New Towns Fund scheme being invested by Central Government.

Peterborough is one of 100 cities that will benefit from additional funding which will be used to transform the city’s economic growth prospects.

The Council’s ambitious plans include a bold transformation of Peterborough Railway Station with improved access from the station to the city centre, Embankment and the new University. It will also include new multi-storey car parks and an office park as well as retail units.

Following the meeting Mr Vara said: “Peterborough is an ambitious city and if our application for additional funds is successful then it will bring forth changes that will help the city to prosper. I will be working closely with the Council and the newly formed Town Board to ensure that the proposals put forward demonstrate the huge potential that Peterborough has to make its mark as a city for investment.”

Cllr John Holdich said: “It was good to see Shailesh and discuss the ambitious plans that the Council has for our great City. The Government is providing additional funds for cities such as ours to improve and we will be submitting our proposals with a view to securing some of that money.”
