Shailesh Vara, MP for North West Cambridgeshire, recently opened the refurbished sports area at Somersham Playing Field.

Mr Vara was joined by Somersham Councillor Steve Criswell at the opening of the improved facility, along with representatives of the Parish Council, the Town Youth Group and Donarbon Ltd. The occasion also formed part of a consultation process with young people, which will allow them to influence future developments on the site.

The refurbishments were funded by contributions from Donarbon, Hunts District Council and Somersham Parish Council.

County Cllr Steve Criswell said:

"Somersham is a large community and we are keen to provide as many facilities as possible for young people. This is the first stage in a programme of planned improvements and I am assisting the Parish Council to source more much needed funding. We are currently applying for £50,000 from the County Council's Playfinder Project."

Shailesh Vara said:

"The refurbishment has improved the area immensely and I fully support the Parish Council's efforts to increase the number of facilities and activities available to young people in Somersham. I was grateful to meet some of the young people who will be benefiting from the improvements."
