Shailesh Vara MP has praised his local community in Parliament following the collapse of Thomas Cook.

As well as highlighting the loss of 1200 local jobs, Mr Vara paid tribute to the many local companies and organisations that have come forward offering jobs to those affected. Mr Vara also spoke of the acts of kindness from the local community such as the offer of free match tickets by Peterborough United and local Ice hockey team, Peterborough Phantoms.

In his reply to Mr Vara, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps commented on the work done by Mr Vara on behalf of his constituents and he also spoke of the Job Centre’s Rapid Response Service to help those who have lost their jobs to get back into employment.

Mr Vara added:

“This is a very difficult time for all those who have lost their jobs and my thoughts go out to them and their families.

I would also like to pay tribute to the many local companies and organisations that have come forward to offer jobs to some of these people, as well as the show of generosity, for example by Peterborough United and the Peterborough Phantoms who are offering free match tickets.”
