BT's decision to install necessary new cabling underground rather than overground in Winwick has been welcomed by Shailesh Vara MP for North West Cambridgeshire. Local residents had expressed their outrage at BT's original proposals, which would have led to two new telegraph poles being erected on their picturesque village green.

Mrs Maggi Stewart, one of Winwick's residents, approached Mr Vara for assistance after opposing BT's plans. He then wrote to BT Chairman, Sir Michael Rake, asking for the decision to be reconsidered and other options pursued. Following Mr Vara's intervention BT staff visited the site and an agreement was reached whereby the cables would be routed under the village green, instead of overhead.

The work should be completed by the end of August.

Mr Vara said:

"It is often the case that big companies press ahead with plans regardless of opposition. However, in this instance BT has done the right thing. I am delighted they have listened to the views of local residents and come up with a sensible and acceptable solution that protects Winwick's village green."

Mrs Maggi Stewart said:

"It is wonderful news. BT could have considerably damaged the look of the Green with additional poles but their revised scheme will not only protect but actually enhance the Green. I much appreciate the time and consideration they have given to our concerns and the new outcome. I am also grateful to Mr Vara for his most helpful support and intervention.
