127309 - Unexplained Wealth Orders: Northern Ireland (Answered)

Nigel Dodds
To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, what discussions she has had with the Home Secretary on the non-introduction of unexplained wealth orders in Northern Ireland and the potential effect that will have on tackling criminality.

Mr Shailesh Vara

My officials have been in regular contact with both the Home Office and the Northern Ireland Department of Justice (DoJ) in relation to the introduction of unexplained wealth orders (UWOs) in Northern Ireland. These orders, and several other elements of the Criminal Finances Act 2017, relate to devolved matters and require legislative consent. We will continue to work towards commencement in order to enhance the powers available to law enforcement to tackle criminality. This is one of the many issues that demonstrate that devolved government is in the best interests of everyone in Northern Ireland.
