Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee
Since his election to Parliament, Shailesh has been serving on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee (DEFRA).
The committee is made up of 14 MPs: 8 Labour, 4 Conservatives, and 2 Liberal Democrats. The Committee Chairman is Michael Jack MP (Con) and the other members are: David Drew (Lab), James Duddridge (Con), Patrick Hall (Lab), Lynne Jones (Lab), Daniel Kawczynski (Con), David Lepper (Lab) Madeleine Moon (Lab), Jamie Reed (Lab), Dan Rogerson (Lib Dem), Sir Peter Soulsby (Lab), David Taylor (Lab), and Roger Williams (Lib Dem).
The Committee meets regularly sometimes twice a week, questions selected people and considers various important issues which come under its remit. The committee is independent, and where necessary, produces reports on subjects it has considered.
Those questioned by the committee include the former Secretary of State for EFRA, Margaret Becket, the present Secretary of State David Milliband, other ministers from the department, the President of the National Farmers Union, Directors of major companies such as Tate & Lyle, civil servants, academics and the like.
