Vara Leads Delegation to Downing Street to protest at Parking Charges

Shailesh Vara today delivered a petition to 10 Downing Street to protest at GNER's 82 per cent increase in car parking charges at Peterborough Railway Station.

Shailesh Vara, MP for North West Cambridgeshire, today delivered a petition to 10 Downing Street to protest at GNER's 82 per cent increase in car parking charges at Peterborough Railway Station.

Mr Vara was accompanied by Andrew Papworth of the Peterborough Evening Telegraph, who have lead the local campaign against the price rises. Local commuter and campaigner, Andy Cullum, made up the delegation.

The petition, signed by over 1,000 people who live in Mr Vara's constituency and the surrounding areas, was handed in to Number 10 along with a letter from Mr Vara to the Prime Minister. Mr Cullum also handed in a letter addressed to Douglas Alexander MP, Secretary of State for Transport.

Mr Vara said:
"GNER should be under no illusions as to the enormous anger felt by local people. Many people will have great difficulty finding the extra money when they are already struggling to make ends meet.

"I very much hope that the Prime Minister will look into this issue, especially as the price rise has come so soon after GNER were awarded a 10 year extension to their franchise."
