Holme School Visit

18th September 2017

Shailesh Vara MP visited Holme Church of England Primary School in Huntingdonshire last Friday and met with staff as well as addressing a school assembly.

Mr Vara met with Chair of Governors, Mr Stephen Juggins, Vice Chair, Mr Jonathan Papworth and Headteacher, Mrs Tamara Allen, who updated him on the progress the school had made since its ‘Good’ rating by Ofsted in March 2017.

During the assembly, Mr Vara spoke to pupils about the role of a Member of Parliament. Mr Vara also took questions on a wide range of subjects including Brexit, the strength of the pound and the subjects raised by constituents who wrote to him.

Following the visit, Mr Vara said:

“I was very pleased to visit Holme Primary School and to meet with pupils, staff and governors.

There were certainly some very interesting questions which demonstrated the depth of education of the pupils.

The school has received positive praise from Ofsted which is very encouraging and a tribute to the governors and staff for all the hard work that they do.”

Tamara Allen, Headteacher of Holme Primary School said:

“The school was delighted to welcome Mr Vara to the school and to talk to us all about his role as an MP. Our children have a good understanding of democracy and were very excited to listen to Mr Vara talk about what that meant as an MP.

They asked a range of questions including ones about Brexit and the weakening pound (!) which Mr Vara responded to with great humour as well as giving information that the children could readily digest.

We are looking now at how we can further some of the older children’s knowledge and are thinking about a trip to parliament.”
